What broadband speed do I need?

The right speed depends on how many people use your connection at once and what they are doing. Here is a rough guide.

A simple rule of thumb

• Up to 100 Mbps: great for one or two people, browsing, email, social media and HD streaming on a few devices.
• 300 Mbps: comfortable for a busy household, multiple people streaming, video calls and gaming at the same time.
• 500 Mbps and up: large households or anyone moving big files, working from home with video, or running lots of smart devices.
• Hyperfibre (1 Gbps and beyond): for power users, content creators and businesses that need the very best.

Upload matters too

Most plans give you more download than upload, which suits everyday use. If you back up to the cloud, run video calls often, or host anything from home, look at a plan with higher upload speed. We offer symmetric plans (the same speed up and down) for exactly this.
