How to improve your home Wi-Fi

If your Wi-Fi feels slow or drops out in certain rooms, the connection itself is often fine, it is the Wi-Fi that needs a little help. Try these in order.

1. Put the router in a better spot

  • Keep it out in the open, not in a cupboard or behind the TV.
  • Place it as central and as high as you can.
  • Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones and thick brick or concrete walls.

2. Restart it now and then

A quick restart clears up a surprising number of slowdowns. Switch the router off, wait ten seconds, and switch it back on.

3. Test with a cable

Plug a laptop directly into the router with a network cable and run a speed test. If the wired speed is good but Wi-Fi is slow, the issue is Wi-Fi coverage, not your plan.

4. Reduce interference

In a busy neighbourhood, lots of nearby networks can clash. Modern routers handle this automatically, but moving to the 5 GHz band for nearby devices often helps.

5. Consider mesh Wi-Fi

For larger or multi-level homes, a single router may not reach everywhere. A mesh system spreads coverage across several units. We can help you choose and set one up, just get in touch.
