What is a SIP trunk?

Think of a SIP trunk as the modern version of the bundle of phone lines that used to come into your building. Instead of copper pairs from the exchange, your PBX connects to our voice network over your internet connection. We supply the phone numbers, the "channels" that decide how many calls you can have on the go at once, and the calling. Your PBX carries on doing what it does: extensions, ring groups, voicemail and the rest.

SIP trunking suits businesses that have invested in a phone system, whether that is 3CX, an Asterisk-based system, or a hardware PBX from Yeastar, Grandstream, Avaya, Cisco or similar, and want NZ numbers, better rates and no ISDN or copper dependency.

What you get with Talk2Me SIP trunking

Enterprise-grade trunking without the enterprise-grade contract.

Scalable call channels

One channel equals one call in progress. Start with what you need today and add or remove channels as your business changes, with no long-term contract.

NZ numbers & porting

Local 06 numbers for South Taranaki, Whanganui and Manawatu, numbers for any other NZ calling area, 0800 and 028 numbers, or port the numbers you already own.

Failover that just works

If your PBX or internet drops, calls to your numbers divert to a mobile, another site or voicemail-to-email automatically, so customers still get through.

Cloud features on top

Add call recording, AI call transcription, sentiment analysis and analytics at the network level, even if your PBX cannot do them.

Local, PBX-literate support

SIP trunk channels, explained

Channels (sometimes called trunks or lines) set how many calls your business can have happening at the same moment, inbound and outbound combined. Five staff on the phone at once needs five channels. Because channels are shared across the whole account rather than tied to individual numbers, a business with ten numbers and a quiet phone might only need three or four. We will help you size it, and you can change it whenever you like.

SIP trunking FAQs

What is a SIP trunk?

A SIP trunk is the modern replacement for a bundle of phone lines. It connects your phone system (PBX) to the public phone network over the internet, carrying as many simultaneous calls as you have channels. You keep your PBX; we provide the numbers, the channels and the calls.

How many channels do I need?

One channel equals one call in progress. Count the most calls your business is likely to have on the go at once, inbound and outbound together, and add a little headroom. Channels can be added or removed as you grow, with no long-term contract.

Which phone systems do you support?

Any PBX or application that speaks standard SIP, including 3CX, Asterisk and FreePBX, Yeastar, Grandstream, Avaya, Cisco and many more. IAX2 is also available for Asterisk-based systems. If you are not sure, tell us what you run and we will confirm.

Can I port my existing numbers onto the trunk?

Yes. Local NZ numbers, 0800 numbers and 028 numbers can all be ported to Talk2Me and delivered over your SIP trunk. We handle the paperwork and schedule the cutover so there is no downtime.

What happens if my PBX or internet goes down?

Set a failover destination and calls to your numbers divert to a mobile, another site or voicemail-to-email whenever your PBX stops responding. Calls keep coming in even when the office is dark.

Are calls secure?

Yes. We support SIP over TLS for encrypted signalling and SRTP for encrypted call audio, along with fraud monitoring, call barring and PIN controls to protect your account from toll fraud.
