Why a public IP address matters (and why we include one)
When you sign up for broadband, one detail almost no one mentions is whether you get a public IP address. At Talk2Me, every fibre and broadband connection comes with one as standard, on home and business plans alike. Here is what that means and why it matters.
CGNAT, the thing we do not do
To save on address space, many providers put customers behind Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT). That means you share one public address with lots of other people, a bit like a whole apartment block sharing a single street number.
It is fine for everyday browsing, but it quietly breaks things:
- Remote access to a home camera, server or NAS
- Hosting a game server or connecting peer to peer
- Some VPNs and remote-work tools
- Port forwarding of any kind
With a public IP, the internet can reach your connection directly, so all of the above just works.
Static IP, when you need a fixed address
A public IP can still change from time to time. If you run a service that needs to be reachable at the same address every time, you can add a static IP for $5 per month plus GST on any plan.
Short version
- Public IP on every Talk2Me connection, home and business, at no extra cost.
- No CGNAT, so remote access, gaming and VPNs work properly.
- Add a static IP for $5 per month plus GST if you need a fixed address.
